What Being Latine/Latinx/Latino in the Workplace Means to Me

If you have worked with me over the past two decades, I have probably told you that I am Mexican American. Proudly, in fact.

Because there have been instances where folks purposefully and deliberately told me, to my face, that I am White.

Having worked in diversity education within college settings for over a decade, I knew and understood how to help college students tap into their cultural values across multiple identities. But it’s been some time since someone asked me to tap into my own identity and how it is impacted by and impacts the workplace.

At the start of Latine Heritage Month (or sometimes known as Hispanic Heritage Month within government circles) I was asked to sit on our Latine Staff Panel to talk with students about my identity. It has since been canceled and hopefully will be rescheduled soon.

The director in charge of the program graciously shared some of the questions that might be asked. I thought I’d prep for the event for when it does happen and share what I will likely say for some of the questions — perhaps to help me dig a little deeper into what I can and want to share about something that is both public and private about my identity.

Ready for the Q & A
