Top 5 Job Search Strategies for Gen X

The 1994 movie Reality Bites summarizes the relationship that Generation X has with work, at least in my opinion.

In the movie, Winona Ryder’s character Lelaina gets fired from her tv production assistant job and scrambles to find work throughout the entire movie. Over the years, re-watching the movie, I have related to the movie’s plot points differently as time passed.

In my 20s, it was Lelaina’s attempt at finding romance and creating a family among her friends.

In my 30s, I related to Troy’s approach to life and wanting to live in the moment.

Who knew that in my 40s, it would be the relentless and endless search for a job?

Once the Gen X cohort reached the age of 40, we became part of the US Equal Economic Opportunity Commission (EEOC) class of protected identities. And with that protected class identity comes some job search strategies that we, as a generation, should be careful to pay attention to.
