In 2018, the college where I worked gave us six weeks’ notice that it was closing. I decided to document this experience in a book, Tales of Displaced Worker. But publishing the book did not coincide with the start of a new full-time job. In fact, I was unemployed from full-time work for over three years.

As the anniversary of this experience is fast approaching, I have decided to revisit some memories from this time to 1. give me some closure and 2. help others who may be experiencing the same emotions related to their employment statuses.

Long-term job searches can bring about a multitude of emotions. I am only going to speak to mine, but I believe they are experienced by others.

I hope this post helps give you clarity. Reach out to me if you want!

The Emotional Toll of a Long-Term Job Search

I recently heard that courage isn’t the opposite of having fear. It’s having fear but doing it anyway. And that is how I approached my long-term job search.

I had been so afraid of being unemployed and telling people I hadn’t been successful with my long-term job search. I felt like I was to blame and that I should feel shame in the situation I didn’t cause but perpetuated.
