JOMO Meets New Job FOMO

Part of my on-boarding experience has been learning about the organization’s policy regarding working-from-home. In my field, prior to the pandemic, this conversation would have been moot: it just wasn’t something that was encouraged or allowed.

But in 2022 and beyond, we know more about how to support the needs of working professionals. This includes offering and supporting working from home — even for newly hired staff. In my previous job that centered around working from home, this was an easy balance to strike. The problem right now: I don’t want to be away from my desk!

My JOMO Management Style

Earlier this summer, I wrote about how I wanted to adopt a Joy of Missing Out (JOMO) approach to my management style. I described this style below:

One way, as a manager, to adopt a JOMO attitude is to evaluate the ways you exhibit trust among your staff. What information do you want versus what you should know? Do your staff need to check in with you to do their routine work, just so you can make sure it’s being done?
