To strengthen the workplace and address diversity and inclusion goals, workplaces must address Black mental health issues. Published originally as part of the Black History Month 2022 Series.

In 2022, the Black History Month theme as created by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) was Black Health and Wellness. From the website: “This theme acknowledges the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of knowing throughout the African Diaspora. The 2022 theme considers activities, rituals, and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well.” The current 2025 theme, African Americans and Labor, doesn’t have the same resonance for this year, so I am re-posting this article with updates that reflect 2025.

Typically Black History Month themes focus on the past achievements and progress of Black people. But what if we focused our collective efforts on their current health and wellness — what type of progress and achievements would we see that impact us all?

Why is this a critical issue to address in 2025?
