35 Followers in 2 Years— What is My Incentive to Reach 100 Followers?

When I began writing on Medium two years ago, I joined the Medium Partner Program. Not because I thought it would generate any sort of discernable income, but mainly to repost blogs I had written for my personal blog and increase their visibility. Two years ago, there was no minimum number of followers required to be part of the program, and my writings grew their own small but stable audience.

Obviously, the changes to the Medium Partner Program have caused me to rethink my approach to obtaining followers. From the many Medium posts I have read over the past two weeks, there were similar patterns of advice:

1. Follow for Follow — just plainly ask others to follow you after you comment on their article, regardless of your thoughts on the piece.
2. Engage with the Writer — this takes a little more time, but make sure you’re commenting on the content (and maybe throw in a follow request).
3. Increase Your Visibility — by joining any number of publications, you can increase your reach and perhaps bring in more readers (and viewers) of your work.
4. Read More Content — you can improve your craft by reading more and learning how to increase the quality of your writing.
